The death toll from the ammonia gas leak at a private seafood processing and export facility in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district increased to nine on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the state government confirmed. The Health Department reported that all deceased are women, with seven hailing from Odisha and two from Assam.
Identities of Victims and Hospitalization Details
Eight of the deceased have been identified as Shibani, Jumani Juang, Geetha Juanga, Purinama Juanga, Champabati Juanga, Parbavathi Juanga, Sita Hasda, and Anjita Soren. One victim remains unidentified. The leak occurred on June 21 during routine operations at the facility in the Kannigaipair/Manjungaranai area near Periyapalayam.
Of the 69 individuals hospitalized, 27 are receiving treatment at Vels Hospital, 18 at Venkateswara Hospital, 11 at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, and 13 at Stanley Medical College Hospital. Two patients have already been discharged.
Symptoms and Investigation
Affected individuals exhibited severe symptoms of ammonia inhalation, including acute breathlessness, coughing, chest discomfort, and irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.
The Health Department stated that the conditions of hospitalized patients are being closely monitored. Monitoring and assessment of the affected area are ongoing to ensure public safety. Coordination between district authorities and healthcare institutions is facilitating timely treatment, surveillance, and response activities, according to the official statement.
