Sivasagar Tank to Get 1km Pedestrian-Friendly Infrastructure
Pedestrian-friendly makeover for Sivasagar Tank

The historic Sivasagar Tank in Upper Assam is set to undergo a significant transformation with the development of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure along its banks. This initiative aims to enhance the experience for visitors to this important heritage site that dates back to the Ahom kingdom era.

Project Details and Implementation

The Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP) is currently working on the design and layout for this ambitious project, which will be executed by the Public Works Department (PWD). According to Subhasish Borah, assistant director of DTCP, the project focuses on a stretch of over 1 kilometer along the tank's banks in front of the historically and architecturally significant Siva Dol Shiva temple.

The infrastructure planned for installation includes safe pavements, pedestrian benches, and dedicated street lights specifically designed for pedestrians. Borah confirmed that similar infrastructure being implemented in Guwahati will also be installed at the Sivasagar site, though he noted that completion will take some time.

Historical Significance of Sivasagar Tank

The Sivasagar Tank represents a remarkable example of 18th-century engineering from the Ahom kingdom period. Originally excavated around 1733–34 by Queen Ambika, chief consort of Ahom king Swargadeo Siva Singha, the tank stands as a significant heritage site that continues to attract visitors and history enthusiasts.

The project in Sivasagar is among several initiatives the directorate is working on outside Guwahati. Borah emphasized that the primary goal is to address the requirements for pedestrian convenience along the banks of this historic water body.

Broader Infrastructure Development Plans

In addition to the Sivasagar project, authorities are also moving forward with pedestrian-friendly infrastructure development at Paltan Bazar in Guwahati, a commercial hub from the British Era. This project will be implemented by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and is expected to begin soon.

The survey of the location, study of vehicular and pedestrian movement, and project design have already been completed for the Paltan Bazar initiative. These parallel projects demonstrate the government's broader commitment to improving pedestrian infrastructure across important heritage and commercial sites in Assam.

The development along Sivasagar Tank represents a significant step toward preserving and enhancing access to Assam's rich historical heritage while providing modern amenities for visitors and local residents alike.
