With private hostels and paying guest accommodations proliferating across Patna, driven by an influx of students and job seekers, serious concerns regarding safety standards, hygiene, and overcrowding have intensified. The rapid growth of these facilities, including those catering to female residents, has prompted the district administration to initiate a comprehensive regulatory response.
Survey Underway to Map Registered and Violating Hostels
In an exclusive conversation with Times of India, Patna District Magistrate Thiyagarajan SM outlined the administration's immediate action plan. A detailed survey of all private hostels has been launched just two days ago, with Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) directed to collect precise data from their respective jurisdictions. The DM stated that within a week, the administration expects to compile authentic figures on both registered establishments and those operating with potential violations, providing a clear picture of the sector's scale.
Inspection and Enforcement to Follow Data Collection
Addressing whether regular inspections are conducted, the DM emphasized a phased approach. "Let the data come first," he remarked, noting that the subsequent step involves thorough inspections of these hostels. The primary focus will be to verify if residents are receiving basic amenities and living in hygienic conditions. Following these inspections, appropriate enforcement actions will be taken against non-compliant operators.
Past Actions and Future Regulatory Framework
When questioned about previous enforcement, the DM acknowledged that actions were taken on an individual basis in response to specific complaints.
