New Delhi has recorded the highest number of crimes against women among metropolitan cities in India for the year 2022, according to the latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The national capital reported 14,111 cases of crimes against women, accounting for a significant share of the total such incidents in the country's major urban centers.
Comparative Analysis of Metro Cities
The NCRB data reveals that New Delhi's figure is substantially higher than other metro cities. Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, reported 4,748 cases, while Mumbai recorded 4,614 cases. Other cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata also featured in the list but with comparatively lower numbers. The data underscores the persistent challenge of women's safety in the capital.
Types of Crimes Reported
Among the crimes reported, the majority were categorized under 'cruelty by husband or relatives' (Section 498A of the IPC), followed by assault on women with intent to outrage modesty, kidnapping, and rape. The data also includes cases under the Dowry Prohibition Act.
- Cruelty by husband or relatives: 5,234 cases
- Assault on women: 3,101 cases
- Kidnapping and abduction: 2,987 cases
- Rape: 1,456 cases
Reasons Behind High Numbers in Delhi
Experts attribute the high number of cases in Delhi to several factors, including dense population, high migration, and increased reporting due to greater awareness and accessibility of complaint mechanisms. The 2012 Nirbhaya case led to stricter laws and more women coming forward to report crimes.
The data also indicates a rise in overall crime against women in Delhi compared to previous years, with 2022 seeing a 10% increase over 2021. However, officials note that this may also reflect improved reporting rather than a proportional increase in incidents.
Government Measures and Response
In response to the data, the Delhi government has reiterated its commitment to women's safety, citing initiatives such as increased CCTV surveillance, deployment of more women police personnel, and the introduction of the 'Himmat' app for emergency assistance. However, activists argue that more needs to be done to address the root causes of violence against women.
The NCRB data serves as a crucial tool for policymakers and law enforcement agencies to identify trends and allocate resources effectively. The high numbers in Delhi call for a focused approach to ensure safety and justice for women in the capital.
