Chennai: Four retired state government employees have approached the Madras High Court, seeking a directive for the state government to formulate and notify the necessary rules to implement the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS), which was announced in January.
Admitting the plea on Friday, Justice P T Asha directed the government to respond to the plea within eight weeks and adjourned the hearing.
According to the petitioners—R Nandagopal, M Kumar, N Punniyamoorthy, and R Lakshmi Narayanan—they were appointed in government service after April 1, 2003, the cut-off date for the old pension scheme, and were thereby governed under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
All four retired from service prior to the date of implementation of TAPS, which takes effect from January 1, 2026. Accordingly, they are entitled to a special compassionate pension proportionate to the length of service rendered, as per the government order dated January 9, 2026.
The petitioners claimed that they have been commonly aggrieved by the non-implementation of TAPS due to the absence of framing rules and operational guidelines notified by the government.
