Kerala's First 'Able Point' Inaugurated in Kochi to Boost Disability Employment

Kochi: In a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and economic empowerment, Kerala Minister R Bindu officially inaugurated the state's first 'Able Point' near Gandhi Park in Kakkanad on Saturday. This pioneering project is designed to provide sustainable employment opportunities for individuals with various disabilities, as well as parents of children with autism, marking a crucial initiative under the state's social justice framework.

Project Aims for Independent Living Through Employment

"Ensuring an independent and self-sufficient life for individuals with disabilities is a primary goal of the department of social justice," stated Minister Bindu during the inauguration ceremony. The 'Able Point' initiative is part of the broader 'Ability Beyond Limits' project, which seeks to create income-generating avenues for both employees with disabilities and those involved in manufacturing products sold at these centers.

The project is being implemented through a collaborative effort involving the Thrikkakara municipality, the Kerala State Handicapped Welfare Corporation, and the Bharatiya Khadi Village Industries Cooperative Society. These centers will function as retail outlets specializing in khadi products, housed in container-like structures strategically placed in public locations to maximize accessibility and visibility.

Expansion Plans and Employment Targets

Minister Bindu outlined ambitious plans for the project's expansion, revealing that efforts are actively underway to establish similar 'Able Point' centers in 100 public locations across Kerala. These sites will include areas with high foot traffic such as local government institutions, medical colleges, temples, and popular tourist destinations, subject to permissions from relevant authorities.

The initiative is expected to generate direct employment for approximately 200 individuals with disabilities, providing them with stable income and vocational opportunities. Indirectly, the project will also benefit numerous workers involved in the manufacturing of khadi and other products sold at these outlets, creating a ripple effect of economic empowerment throughout the community.

Upcoming 'Sushakti' Project to Further Disability Empowerment

In a related development, Minister Bindu announced the upcoming launch of another groundbreaking initiative called 'Sushakti Disability Self-Help Groups' on Monday. Modeled after the successful Kudumbashree program that empowered women through income-generating enterprises, the Sushakti project is specifically designed to enhance the economic independence and social integration of individuals with disabilities.

"The minister emphasised the need to realise more employment and production activities that lead everyone towards self-sufficiency," highlighting the government's commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society. This dual approach—combining the retail-focused 'Able Point' centers with the community-based Sushakti groups—aims to address multiple facets of disability empowerment, from direct job creation to fostering entrepreneurial skills and collective support networks.

As Kerala continues to pioneer innovative social welfare schemes, the inauguration of the first 'Able Point' in Kochi represents a tangible step towards transforming the lives of individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to achieve financial independence and meaningful participation in society.
