Senior officials from the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh conducted a detailed inspection of problematic road stretches in Sector 27-D on Sunday to assess the progress of restoration work. The move comes after a technical report highlighted serious defects in the road's foundation.
High-Level Inspection and Root Cause Analysis
The inspection team included key figures such as Chief Engineer CB Ojha, the Superintending Engineer (B&R), and the concerned Executive Engineer. During their visit, they closely monitored the ongoing rectification efforts. Officials confirmed that the current road defects are a direct result of past construction deficiencies and assured that all repair work is now being carried out strictly according to the technical recommendations provided by the National Institute of Technical Teachers' Training and Research (NITTTR).
Timeline of the Repair Project
The Municipal Corporation initiated repair and recarpeting work on the V-6 roads in Sector 27-D in mid-November. This project was launched because repeated bituminous layering over many years had significantly raised the road levels, causing issues. However, during the execution phase, engineers encountered unexpected problems, observing cracks and surface deterioration on several stretches of the road.
Given the seriousness of these newly discovered issues, the MC decided to seek expert advice. They approached NITTTR for a professional assessment of the situation.
NITTTR's Expert Findings and the Path Forward
NITTTR submitted its detailed report on November 24. The report pinpointed the core issue: subsurface sinking had occurred beneath the road. This sinking was caused by slush formation, which resulted from weak sub-base conditions. The problem was further aggravated by multiple factors:
- Movement of heavy machinery during the scarifying process.
- Continuous compaction work on the unstable base.
- Earlier repairs related to road-cuts that may have compromised the structure.
Armed with this expert analysis, the Municipal Corporation is now focused on a technically sound restoration. The current work aims to address the root cause of the subsidence rather than just applying superficial fixes. The presence of top officials at the site underscores the administration's commitment to ensuring the repairs are durable and meet the required standards for Chandigarh's infrastructure.
