Heavy vehicular traffic on the highway passing through Canacona creates significant hazards for students attempting to cross the road. A parent highlighted that the constant flow of vehicles makes crossing extremely difficult and perilous for children traveling to and from school.
St Teresa of Jesus High School, which encompasses primary and higher secondary sections, presents a particularly challenging scenario. The institution is located on both sides of the road in Chavdi, Canacona, forcing students and teachers to navigate the busy main highway multiple times daily.
Municipal Council Chairperson Details Infrastructure Deficiencies
Canacona Municipal Council chairperson Laxuman Pagui confirmed the hazardous conditions, explaining that the school's dual-side location creates substantial difficulties for the educational community. Pagui further revealed that several schools in the area lack basic safety features.
"Some schools are operating without proper compound walls, and in certain locations, essential safety measures like speed breakers or designated pedestrian crossings are completely absent," Pagui stated, underscoring the infrastructure gaps.

PTA chairman Lesima Dias emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating: "There is an immediate requirement for enhanced traffic management and strict enforcement of school zone safety regulations to prevent potential accidents. Reckless driving in school areas has become a serious concern that demands immediate attention."
