The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has stated that it has no information regarding the resignation of Champat Rai as secretary of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, marking a departure from its earlier stance when it publicly defended him.
VHP's position change
Last week, the VHP had strongly defended Rai amid speculation about his potential exit. However, on Friday, a VHP spokesperson said, "We have no information about any resignation. We are not aware of any such development." The statement signals a shift in the organisation's communication strategy regarding the matter.
Background of the resignation rumors
Reports had emerged that Champat Rai, a key figure in the Ram Temple construction, had submitted his resignation to the trust. Rai, who has been closely associated with the temple project for years, was reportedly considering stepping down due to personal reasons, though no official confirmation has been made by the trust or the VHP.
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, established by the central government in 2020, oversees the construction and management of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Rai has served as its secretary since inception, playing a pivotal role in coordinating the project.
Impact on the temple project
Political analysts suggest that any change in the trust's leadership could impact the ongoing construction, which is in its final stages. The temple is expected to be completed by early 2027, with the consecration ceremony slated for January 2027. However, the VHP's denial of knowledge about Rai's resignation may indicate internal disagreements or a lack of clarity within the organisation.
According to sources close to the trust, no formal resignation letter has been received, and Rai continues to perform his duties. The trust is likely to issue an official statement in the coming days to clarify the situation.
