Uttar Pradesh Ministers with Slim 2022 Victories Face Disproportionate Voter Deletions After SIR
A detailed analysis of electoral data from Uttar Pradesh has uncovered a politically sensitive and striking pattern. Ministers who secured their seats with the narrowest margins in the 2022 state elections are now disproportionately associated with the highest numbers of voter deletions following the Summary Revision (SIR) exercise, which was completed on April 10, 2026. This trend raises significant questions about electoral integrity and the potential impact on future contests.
Constituencies with Razor-Thin Margins Show Alarming Deletion Ratios
Among the current ministers who narrowly clinched victory in 2022, several constituencies stand out for their extreme voter deletion figures. In Baraut, State Minister Krishan Pal Malik won by a mere 315 votes, yet his constituency experienced voter deletions that amount to a staggering 157 times his victory margin. Similarly, in Bilaspur, Baldev Singh Aulakh's win by 307 votes is overshadowed by deleted voters exceeding 100 times his winning margin.
Sitapur presents another stark example, where State Minister Rakesh Rathour Guru's victory margin of just 1,253 votes is dwarfed by deletions that are 75 times larger, totaling 95,032 deletions. These cases highlight a concerning correlation between slim electoral successes and subsequent high voter purges.
Cabinet Ministers Also Affected by This Pattern
Even ministers holding cabinet rank are not immune to this trend. In Shahjahanpur, Cabinet Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna won with a margin of 9,313 votes, but post-SIR deletions were over 11 times that margin. Meerut South, with a margin of 7,942 votes, shows deletions nearly 15 times the margin, while Mainpuri (6,766 margin) and Hastinapur (7,312 margin) exhibit deletion multiples above 6 to 7 times.
In contrast, ministers who secured their seats with large margins appear relatively insulated from such high deletion rates. For instance, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's margin of over 1 lakh votes corresponds to deletions just 0.32 times his margin, and constituencies like Mehroni and Khair also remain below 1x, indicating a stark divide based on initial victory margins.
Former Ministers Who Lost in 2022 Show Similar Trends
This pattern becomes even more pronounced when examining former ministers who lost in the 2022 elections. Constituencies such as Dibiyapur, Itwa, Baheri, and Sirathu demonstrate that high voter deletions were already prevalent in areas where margins were thin or declining.
Dibiyapur is the most extreme case among these: former minister Lakhan Singh Rajput lost by just 473 votes, but voter deletions post-SIR were nearly 68 times the loss margin. In Itwa, a loss margin of 1,662 votes coincided with deletions 24 times higher, involving former basic education minister Satish Chandra Dwivedi who lost the seat in 2022.
Notably, high-profile losses like Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya in Sirathu show deletions at 7.23 times the losing margin, while others such as Suresh Rana and Sangeet Som range between 3 to 4 times. This suggests that the trend of high deletions in narrowly contested areas is not limited to current office-holders but extends to past electoral battles as well.
The data underscores a critical issue in Uttar Pradesh's electoral landscape, where slim victory margins are closely tied to significant voter deletions after the SIR process, potentially influencing political dynamics and future election outcomes.
