TMC MPs to Vote Against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in No-Confidence Motion

In a significant political development, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs are set to support the no-confidence motion and vote against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. According to news agency ANI, this decision comes as per the direction of the party's chairperson, Mamata Banerjee, marking a shift in the opposition's stance.

Shift in TMC's Position

Earlier, TMC—one of the key constituents of the INDIA bloc—had decided not to back the resolution. This initial reluctance had led to confidence among treasury benches members that Birla could secure support from outside the opposition bloc as well. However, the latest directive from Mamata Banerjee has reversed this position, intensifying the political showdown.

Showdown Set for March 9

The stage is now set for a fresh confrontation between the BJP-led NDA and the opposition as the Lok Sabha will take up the resolution for the removal of Speaker Om Birla on March 9. This coincides with Parliament reconvening for the second part of the Budget session starting Monday, adding to the high-stakes political drama.

Accusations Against the Speaker

Congress MPs have accused Birla of being partisan, alleging that he "openly espouses the version of the ruling party on all controversial matters." They argue that this behavior constitutes a serious danger to the proper functioning of the Lok Sabha. The list of business further states, "That in his partisan attitude he disregards the rights of Members of the House and makes pronouncements and gives rulings calculated to affect and undermine such rights; that all these acts constitute a serious danger to the proper functioning of this House and ventilating effectively the felt concerns and grievances of the people, and therefore resolves that he be removed from his Office."

Party Whips Issued

In preparation for the vote, both the BJP and Congress have issued whips to their respective Lok Sabha members, urging them to ensure their presence in the House. This move aims to marshal maximum strength, as a division of votes is expected. While the BJP's whip calls for mandatory attendance of its MPs on the first two days, Congress's directive stands for the first three days, highlighting the importance both parties place on this motion.

Speaker's Right to Defend

Under parliamentary rules, Speaker Om Birla is allowed to be present in the House, though not occupying the Chair, to defend himself against the allegations. This provision adds a layer of procedural nuance to the upcoming proceedings, as Birla may address the charges directly during the debate.

The no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker underscores the deepening rift between the ruling coalition and the opposition, with TMC's support potentially tipping the scales in what promises to be a closely watched parliamentary battle.
