Adhikari's Sharp Attack in Assembly
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, launched a blistering attack on the previous state government during the assembly session on June 23, 2026. He asserted that the time for accountability has arrived, saying, 'Duniya gol hai, sabka hisaab bhi hoga' (The world is round, everyone will have to give an account).
Allegations of Corruption and Mismanagement
Adhikari accused the former administration of widespread corruption, particularly in the allocation of government contracts and the implementation of welfare schemes. He claimed that the previous government had misused public funds and failed to deliver on promises made to the people of West Bengal. According to Adhikari, the state's financial health deteriorated under the previous regime, leading to a debt burden of over Rs 5 lakh crore.
Demand for Probe and Justice
The BJP leader demanded a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities, including the recruitment scam in government departments and the mishandling of funds meant for flood relief. He stated, 'The people of Bengal have been cheated for years. Now, the truth will come out.' Adhikari also called for the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe these cases and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Reaction from Ruling Party
In response, ruling party members dismissed Adhikari's allegations as baseless and politically motivated. A senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) minister said, 'These are false accusations aimed at diverting attention from the BJP's failures at the national level. The previous government worked tirelessly for the development of Bengal.' The minister added that all schemes were implemented transparently and that the state's economy had grown under their leadership.
Political Significance
The confrontation comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with the BJP stepping up its criticism of the TMC government ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Adhikari's remarks are seen as an attempt to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment and position the BJP as a credible alternative. Political analysts suggest that the corruption narrative could be a key issue in the upcoming polls, with both parties trading accusations.
Public Reaction
Outside the assembly, supporters of both parties held demonstrations. BJP activists carried placards demanding a CBI inquiry into alleged scams, while TMC workers countered with slogans praising the previous government's achievements. The debate has also sparked discussions on social media, with hashtags like #BengalAccountability and #TruthWillPrevail trending locally.
