Sasikala and Ramadoss Launch Campaigns Against AIADMK in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

In the lead-up to the April 23 assembly election in Tamil Nadu, political dynamics are shifting as key figures target the ruling AIADMK. V K Sasikala, the close aide of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, has embarked on a mission to woo the Thevar community, a dominant OBC group in southern and central regions of the state. This community has historically been a backbone of AIADMK support, but Sasikala aims to change that.

New Political Outfits and Strategic Alliances

Last month, Sasikala founded the All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, a new political outfit. Through her campaign, she has consistently criticized AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, claiming that many in the Thevar community are dissatisfied with his leadership. Sasikala has fielded 75 candidates, with approximately 50% of them contesting in the Thevar belt, signaling her focus on this key demographic.

In a strategic move, Sasikala has allied with PMK founder S Ramadoss. Both leaders share a sense of betrayal: Sasikala was sidelined in AIADMK after Jayalalithaa's death, while Ramadoss has lost control of the PMK to his son, Anbumani Ramadoss. This alliance aims to disrupt the political landscape by targeting their former parties.

Ramadoss's Campaign in the Vanniyar Belt

S Ramadoss has fielded candidates in 37 constituencies across the Vanniyar belt, including Dharmapuri, where his daughter-in-law Sowmiya Anbumani is contesting. The Vanniyars are a politically influential and numerically significant group in northern Tamil Nadu, comprising roughly 25% of the state's total population. Ramadoss's campaign is emotionally charged, with accusations that his son Anbumani has betrayed him. His candidates are focusing their attacks more on Anbumani than on other political opponents, highlighting internal family and party conflicts.

Like Sasikala, Ramadoss is expected to play a spoiler role for the AIADMK-led front. His efforts could split votes in the northern, delta, and southern districts, where even a small margin could sway results. Political observers note that in the 2021 elections, the victory margin was less than 3,000 votes in 25 constituencies, making every vote count in this multi-cornered contest.

Impact on Election Outcomes

Political critic Rajan Kurai Krishnan commented on the potential impact of these campaigns. "Sasikala's criticism of Palaniswami and his supporters over her removal from the party post will have an impact. Similarly, you cannot erase Ramadoss and his four decades of politics for the community. Together, they will certainly act as spoilers for the AIADMK-led front in the northern, delta, and southern districts," he said. This analysis underscores how personal grievances and community-focused strategies could reshape election results.

Other Players in the Fray

Beyond Sasikala and Ramadoss, other political figures are also targeting AIADMK. Puthiya Tamilagam founder K Krishnaswamy has fielded candidates in around 60 constituencies in the western and southern regions, adding to the competitive environment. Additionally, Tamiliga Vazhvurimai Katchi functionary T Velmurugan, after exiting the DMK-led front, has fielded candidates in several segments, further fragmenting the vote.

With the state witnessing a multi-cornered contest, even a split of around 1,000 votes could tilt results, as noted by political observers. This election is shaping up to be a test of loyalty, community influence, and strategic alliances, with key players like Sasikala and Ramadoss at the forefront of the battle against AIADMK.
