The newly formed West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has announced the removal of a football sculpture at Salt Lake Stadium that was designed by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The decision, made on May 19, 2026, has sparked political debate across the state.
Reason for Removal
Government officials stated that the sculpture, installed in 2023, was a symbol of the previous administration's political branding. The new government believes that public spaces should not reflect individual political figures. The sculpture, made of fiberglass and standing 15 feet tall, depicted a football with Banerjee's signature style.
Political Reactions
The Trinamool Congress criticized the move, calling it a waste of public funds and a disrespect to Banerjee's legacy. However, the ruling party argued that the removal is necessary to depoliticize sports infrastructure. Local residents have mixed reactions, with some supporting the decision and others opposing it.
The sculpture will be relocated to a museum, according to the Sports Ministry. The cost of removal is estimated at Rs. 2 lakh, which the government claims will be covered by savings from other projects.
