Jakhar Calls on AAP MLAs to Defy Party Directive at Akal Takth
Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Monday urged Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs to disregard the party diktat regarding their testimony before Sri Akal Takth in the Bhagwant Mann video controversy, emphasizing the importance of following their conscience. Jakhar made the remarks in New Delhi, asserting that no political whip applies at the highest temporal seat of the Sikh faith.
“To the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs who are going to appear before Sri Akal Takht Sahib, as on every previous occasion, you have been told what you should say and what you should not. A written directive from Delhi has been placed in your hands, instructing you to sign it and present it before Sri Akal Takht Sahib,” Jakhar stated.
Conscience Over Party Orders
Jakhar reminded the MLAs that the Akal Takth represents the authority of the Guru, not a legislative assembly bound by party whips. “It is not a legislative assembly where you are bound to obey your party’s whip. At least, in the presence of your Guru, speak according to your conscience,” he urged.
He warned that sacrificing integrity for a party ticket would lead to spiritual rejection. “Remember, if you are rejected at the Guru’s door, you will find no refuge anywhere—neither in this world nor in the next,” Jakhar admonished the ruling party MLAs in Punjab.
Background of the Mann Video Row
Sikh MLAs from all parties are appearing before Akal Takth on Monday in connection with a controversial video involving Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The video, which surfaced recently, has sparked political and religious debate, prompting the Sikh clergy to summon legislators for clarification. The Akal Takth is expected to issue a directive based on the testimonies.
Jakhar’s intervention highlights the tension between political allegiance and religious duty, as AAP MLAs face pressure from both their party leadership and the Sikh religious institution. The former BJP chief’s comments reflect broader concerns about the erosion of ethical conduct in politics.
