President Droupadi Murmu's Spiritual Journey to Puri's Jagannath Temple
President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a deeply spiritual visit to the revered Jagannath Temple in Puri on Wednesday, marking her fourth pilgrimage to the sacred site since assuming the highest office of the nation. Her day began in the serene hours of the morning, reflecting a profound connection to tradition and devotion.
Morning Rituals at Swetaganga Pond
At approximately 7 am, the President arrived at the holy Swetaganga pond, where she engaged in the solemn rituals of 'shraddha' and 'pinda daan'. These ceremonies are performed to honor and pay respects to ancestors, showcasing her commitment to cultural and familial traditions. The early morning atmosphere added a layer of tranquility to these sacred acts.
Grand Welcome at the Lion's Gate
By 7.40 am, President Murmu reached the iconic Lion's Gate of the Jagannath Temple, where she was warmly received by a distinguished gathering. This included Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Puri Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, along with the temple's chief administrator and senior servitors. Their presence underscored the significance of her visit to the state and the temple community.
Sacred Darshan and Temple Ceremonies
After offering prayers at the 'Arun Stambh', the President entered the sanctum sanctorum for a divine darshan of Lord Jagannath. She remained inside for nearly 20 minutes, lighting 'diyas' as Vedic chants resonated through the Nata Mandap, creating an atmosphere of spiritual elevation. Following this, she visited the Mukti Mandap to receive blessings from the priests, further enriching her spiritual experience.
Her devotion extended to offering prayers at the temples of goddess Bimala and goddess Lakshmi within the complex. In a gesture for her well-being, the temple administration and servitors hoisted the 'Patitapabana Bana' atop the Nilachakra, symbolizing protection and blessings.
Reflection and Traditional Offerings
While departing, President Murmu took a few moments to sit on the 'Baisi Pahacha', engaging in quiet reflection and prayer. At the Lion's Gate, temple authorities presented her with sacred 'sukhili bhog', a traditional khandua patta, and a pattachitra painting. This artwork depicted the deities in Sunabesha, surrounded by the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, highlighting the rich artistic heritage of Odisha.
Interaction with Devotees and Security Measures
As she exited the temple premises, the President walked a short distance, greeting devotees who had lined up on both sides of the road, showcasing her approachable and gracious demeanor. In view of her visit, security was significantly tightened in Puri, with 30 police platoons deployed across the city. Entry for general devotees was temporarily suspended from 6 am to 8.10 am, resuming only after her visit concluded, ensuring safety without disrupting the temple's routine.
Historical Context and Itinerary
This visit is part of President Murmu's two-day Odisha tour, which began on Tuesday. She was welcomed by the governor, chief minister, deputy chief minister, local MLAs, the district collector, and the SP upon her arrival. Reflecting on her previous visits, Murmu has been to the shrine in 2022 soon after becoming President, during the 2024 Rath Yatra, and again in December 2024 for Navy Day celebrations in Puri.
Temple chief administrator Aravind Padhee expressed delight, stating, "The district administration, temple authorities and servitors were delighted by the President's visit." This sentiment echoes the honor felt by the local community.
After her temple prayers, President Murmu flew in a special IAF helicopter to her hometown Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district. There, she will attend a series of programs during her three-day stay, with plans to return to New Delhi on February 7, continuing her engagement with the people and traditions of Odisha.
