Prime Minister Narendra Modi Pens Historic Three-Page Letter to Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Bihar Diwas

In a significant political gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday wrote a detailed three-page letter to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the occasion of Bihar Diwas. This marks the first such personal correspondence from Modi to Nitish since 2014, when the current Prime Minister assumed office at the national level.

Commemorating Bihar's Formation and Praising Governance

Bihar Diwas commemorates the creation of the state in 1912, when it was carved out of the erstwhile Bengal Presidency during British colonial rule. In his letter, Prime Minister Modi offered extensive praise to Nitish Kumar, whose Janata Dal (United) party is a crucial ally of the BJP-led government at the Centre.

Modi credited the Bihar Chief Minister with bringing major transformation to the state through sustained focus on governance and social welfare initiatives. "Under your leadership, Bihar has witnessed a major transformation. Your personal commitment to good governance and the welfare of all sections of society has started a new stream of trust, stability and progress in the state," the Prime Minister wrote in his message.

Highlighting Central Government Contributions

The Prime Minister also emphasized the Centre's role in Bihar's development journey, stating that his government had been fortunate to contribute to the state's progress. "I consider myself fortunate that I and my government have got the opportunity to accelerate Bihar's development journey," Modi noted in the letter.

Nitish Kumar, Bihar's longest-serving Chief Minister, later shared a screenshot of the three-page letter on his social media accounts, making the correspondence public.

Beyond personal praise, Modi used the message to highlight specific development achievements in Bihar under the Union government. He referenced the construction of 40 lakh houses and distribution of 1.2 crore gas connections in the state, linking Bihar's future to the broader "Viksit Bharat" vision for 2047 that aims for India to become a developed nation.

Celebrating Bihar's People and Cultural Heritage

A significant portion of the letter was devoted to praising the people of Bihar and their contributions both within India and abroad. Writing in Hindi, Modi stated that Bihar's people had built a distinct identity through "hard work, honesty and talent" and had made incomparable contributions across diverse fields including social service, industry, education, art, and music.

The Prime Minister noted that people from Bihar carry the state's cultural richness and values wherever they go. Recalling his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, Modi mentioned he had closely observed the contributions of Biharis to Gujarat's development, particularly in the city of Surat. He also referenced a major event held in Surat when Bihar marked 100 years of its formation.

Modi further highlighted how he had witnessed Bihar's culture thriving in countries such as Mauritius, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, where people with roots in the state had preserved their traditions. He cited the Chhath festival as the strongest example of Bihar's growing global cultural identity, noting that the festival is now celebrated enthusiastically across the world.

Promoting Local Products and Infrastructure Development

The Prime Minister outlined specific steps taken by the Central government to promote Bihar's local products and heritage. He mentioned the establishment of the National Makhana Board to boost products such as makhana (fox nuts) and create new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs in the state. Modi also referenced efforts to give Nalanda University a new identity, stating this was helping revive Bihar's ancient knowledge traditions.

On infrastructure development, Modi asserted that Bihar had made "remarkable progress" in connectivity. He pointed to the expansion of rail and air links, the inauguration of a new terminal at Patna airport last year, improved air connectivity in Darbhanga, and the construction of a new terminal building in Purnia. The Prime Minister also recalled the public enthusiasm during the inauguration of the Aunta-Simaria bridge project.

Political Speculation and Timing Analysis

The timing and tone of the letter have triggered substantial political speculation in Bihar. Many political observers are viewing the correspondence as a formal acknowledgement of a major transition, coming just as Nitish Kumar prepares to potentially shift from state politics to a national role in the Rajya Sabha.

Political analysts suggest the emotional tenor of the letter appears aimed at reassuring Nitish Kumar's support base that he is being elevated with respect rather than being pushed aside. The message is being interpreted by many as signaling a smooth transfer of power in Bihar.

With Nitish Kumar potentially moving to Delhi, speculation has intensified that the BJP may install its own Chief Minister in Bihar for the first time. There is discussion that Nitish's son, Nishant Kumar, might be considered for a significant role such as Deputy Chief Minister in any new arrangement.

The three-page letter represents not just a commemoration of Bihar Diwas but a carefully crafted political document that acknowledges past achievements while potentially signaling future political realignments in one of India's most politically significant states.
