PM Modi Honors Kerala Fishermen's Valor and Announces Historic State Renaming
Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a powerful address at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Akhila Kerala Dheevara Sabha (AKDS) in Kochi on Wednesday, paying rich tributes to the state's fishing community for their extraordinary courage, service, and dedication during the devastating 2018 floods. The Prime Minister emphasized that their participation in national movements, including the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, stands as undeniable proof of their enduring commitment to the nation's progress and cultural heritage.
Historic Renaming: Kerala Officially Becomes Keralam
In a landmark announcement that brought cheers from the audience, PM Modi revealed that the Union government has officially renamed the state from Kerala to Keralam. "This is a celebration for my Malayali brothers and sisters," declared Modi. "It was your long-standing wish to change Kerala to Keralam, and the BJP-led NDA government has made it a reality. This beautiful place now proudly carries its rightful name. I congratulate everyone for their persistent efforts in achieving this significant milestone."
Substantial Government Support for Fisher Community
Highlighting the comprehensive initiatives undertaken by the Union government to uplift and empower the fishing community, Modi detailed substantial improvements in maritime safety. "Safety for fishers venturing out to sea and returning home was a major concern in the past," he stated. "Now, safety measures have improved significantly, with approximately 7,000 advanced transponders installed on Kerala's fishing boats. This technology enables real-time tracking and monitoring, ensuring greater security for our brave fishermen."
Under the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, a substantial allocation of Rs 1,400 crore has been designated for Kerala. These funds are strategically aimed at enhancing infrastructure, providing crucial financial support, and mainstreaming the fishing community into the nation's economic framework. "The youth are poised to lead the community in the burgeoning blue economy, strengthening matsya farmer producer organizations and creating new avenues for sustainable growth," Modi added.
Celebrating Five Decades of Advocacy and Community Legacy
PM Modi acknowledged the AKDS as a formidable organization that has tirelessly fought for fishers' rights over the past 50 years. "The Dheevara Sabha's tradition is an integral part of the country's legendary social movements," he remarked. "This resilient community has demonstrated remarkable ability in protecting both the sea and the land, embodying the spirit of environmental stewardship and social responsibility."
During his address, Modi also took a moment to honor two iconic figures: Pandit Karuppan, who fervently raised his voice for the cause of rights and social justice, and Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, whose global reverence and humanitarian work continue to inspire millions worldwide.
Distinguished Gathering at the Golden Jubilee Event
The significant event was graced by prominent leaders of the fishing community, including AKDS president Varijakshan, general secretary V Dinakaran, and senior vice-president Poonthura Sreekumar, among other dignitaries. Their presence underscored the collective commitment to advancing the welfare and recognition of Kerala's fishing populace, marking a historic day of celebration and forward-looking announcements.
