Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday dismissed remarks by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray about an 'Operation Devendra,' asserting that he has full backing from the BJP leadership. 'I don't have wings, so no question of anybody clipping them,' Fadnavis said, responding to Thackeray's jibe during a press conference in Mumbai.
Fadnavis rejects Thackeray's claim
Speaking to reporters, Fadnavis made light of Thackeray's comment, which suggested that the BJP was planning to replace him as chief minister. 'Such statements are baseless. The BJP is a disciplined party, and our leaders have always supported me,' he said. Fadnavis, who returned to the chief minister's post in December 2024 after a brief stint in the opposition, emphasized that his position is secure.
Background of the remark
Thackeray, while addressing party workers earlier this week, had referred to 'Operation Devendra,' insinuating that Fadnavis's days as CM were numbered. The term 'Operation' has been used in Maharashtra politics before, notably during the 2022 political crisis that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. Fadnavis, however, brushed aside the comparison, stating that the political landscape has changed since then.
BJP leadership stands firm
Fadnavis also highlighted the unwavering support from the BJP's top brass, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. 'Our party functions as a family. There is no room for such speculation,' he added. Political analysts note that Fadnavis's strong rebuttal aims to quell any internal dissent ahead of the upcoming local body elections.
Thackeray's strategy questioned
Opposition leaders have questioned Thackeray's timing, with some suggesting that his remarks are an attempt to divert attention from internal Shiv Sena (UBT) issues. Fadnavis, however, chose not to engage further, saying, 'I focus on development, not on such distractions.'
