Government Denies National Monument Status for Mangarh Dham
Jaipur: The Union government has officially clarified that there is no proposal under consideration to declare Mangarh Dham in Banswara a national monument. This statement was made in Parliament on Wednesday, amid ongoing political discussions and criticism regarding the historic tribal site.
Parliamentary Response to Tribal Heritage Site
In response to questions raised by Udaipur BJP MP Mannalal Rawat in the Lok Sabha, Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat provided a detailed reply. He confirmed that while demands have been made in the past for national monument status for Mangarh Dham, no such proposal is currently pending with the government.
Minister Shekhawat further elaborated that there are no plans to produce films or web series on Mangarh Dham or on tribal icons associated with the site, such as Birsa Munda. Additionally, no literature has been commissioned by the government on tribal heroes linked to this location.
Historical Significance of Mangarh Dham
Mangarh Dham, situated on the border of Rajasthan and Gujarat, holds immense importance for the Bhil community. It is closely associated with a significant tribal uprising in Indian history. On November 17, 1913, a large gathering of Bhil Adivasis assembled at Mangarh Hill under the leadership of Govind Guru.
During this assembly, British forces opened fire on the tribals, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,500 people. This tragic event is often referred to as the "Adivasi Jallianwala Bagh," drawing parallels to the infamous Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919.

The government's clarification comes at a time when there has been renewed political criticism and debate over the recognition and preservation of tribal heritage sites. Mangarh Dham's historical and cultural significance continues to be a point of discussion among various stakeholders.
