Mysuru MLA Honors Babu Jagjivan Ram's Legacy on 119th Birth Anniversary
In a heartfelt tribute to a towering figure in Indian politics, Chamaraja MLA K Harishgowda on Sunday highlighted the profound contributions of former deputy prime minister Babu Jagjivan Ram to nation-building and the welfare of the people. The event, held at Kalamandir in Mysuru, marked the 119th birth anniversary of Jagjivan Ram, drawing attention to his enduring legacy.
Celebrating a Stalwart's Achievements
Presiding over the celebrations, Harishgowda emphasized that Jagjivan Ram had successfully handled key Union ministries, including defence and agriculture, before ascending to the position of deputy prime minister. "His leadership in these critical portfolios laid a strong foundation for India's progress," Harishgowda remarked, underscoring the former leader's multifaceted role in shaping the nation.
The event was jointly organized by a coalition of local bodies and associations, including:
- The district administration
- Zilla panchayat
- Mysuru City Corporation
- Department of social welfare
- Dr BR Ambedkar and Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram associations

Focus on Empowerment and Education
Harishgowda also addressed contemporary issues, noting that the state government has successfully implemented schemes and programmes aimed at empowering Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other vulnerable sections. He urged these communities to prioritize education as a key to entering the social mainstream. "Both boys and girls must give equal importance to higher education to break barriers and achieve success," he asserted, calling for a renewed focus on academic advancement.
MLC D Thimmaiah on Jagjivan Ram's Vision
MLC D Thimmaiah, who inaugurated the event, spoke passionately about Jagjivan Ram's efforts to promote inter-caste marriages and build an equal, discrimination-free society. He recounted how Jagjivan Ram worked alongside Mahatma Gandhi during the freedom struggle to liberate the country from colonial rule, highlighting his early commitment to social justice.
Recalling Jagjivan Ram's tenure as Union minister, Thimmaiah detailed several key achievements:
- Creation of 10 lakh jobs in the railways, boosting employment
- Focus on food security through innovative agricultural initiatives
- Expansion of post offices across the country to improve connectivity
- Service in multiple capacities for the nation's betterment
"His work transcended political boundaries and touched the lives of millions," Thimmaiah added, painting a picture of a leader dedicated to holistic development.
