Goa's Premium Mancurad Mango Prices Witness Sharp Decline as Harvest Season Peaks

In a welcome development for fruit lovers, the prices of the highly sought-after Mancurad mangoes in Goa have experienced a significant drop of nearly Rs 1,000 per dozen over the past week. This price correction is bringing much-needed relief to consumers as the summer fruit season gains full momentum across the coastal state.

Current Market Rates Reflect Seasonal Adjustment

As of this week, the Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Mancurad mangoes, often celebrated as Goa's signature variety, are now being sold at approximately Rs 1,500 per dozen in local markets. This marks a substantial decrease from the Rs 2,500 per dozen price point observed just last week. The Mancurad mango is renowned for its distinctive rich aroma, exceptional sweetness, and limited cultivation, factors that traditionally contribute to its premium pricing each year.

Traders Attribute Price Drop to Increased Supply

Market traders and fruit vendors have explained that this price adjustment follows a predictable seasonal pattern. The mango season commenced in February with extremely limited supply, which commanded premium prices ranging between Rs 5,000 and Rs 6,000 per dozen. These initial high rates were driven by early harvests, low production volumes, and intense demand from mango connoisseurs and enthusiasts.

"However, with more orchards now entering the active harvesting phase, supply has improved steadily over the past few weeks," a local fruit vendor commented. "This increased availability has directly led to a drop in prices, making these prized mangoes more accessible to a broader section of consumers."

Consumers Hopeful for Further Reductions

While the current rate of Rs 1,500 per dozen remains relatively high compared to other mango varieties, many consumers are optimistic about additional price reductions as the harvest reaches its peak in the coming weeks. Vendors indicate that prices are likely to stabilize further, contingent on weather conditions and the overall yield from orchards across Goa.

There is a strong possibility of additional price drops if supply continues to rise steadily through April and May. "Once later mango varieties start appearing in the market, the hype around Mancurad typically reduces, and prices can fall further to as low as Rs 600 per dozen," another vendor explained, highlighting the typical seasonal trajectory.

This price movement underscores the dynamic nature of agricultural markets, where premium products like the GI-tagged Mancurad mango see significant fluctuations based on harvest cycles, supply chain dynamics, and consumer demand patterns.
