Mumbai Metro Tragedy Victim's Body to be Flown to Varanasi for Last Rites
The body of Ramdhan Yadav, the 50-year-old victim of the devastating concrete block collapse at Mumbai's Metro Line 4 construction site, will be transported to Varanasi on Tuesday via air ambulance. From there, it will be taken to his native Barsathi village in Jaunpur district, where he served as the elected sarpanch, for the final funeral rites.
Family Initially Refused Body, Demanded Share of Contractor Penalty
In a dramatic turn of events, the grieving relatives had initially refused to claim Ramdhan Yadav's body, demanding that at least Rs 1 crore from the Rs 5 crore penalty imposed on the contractor by authorities be paid directly to the family. This standoff was resolved after extensive discussions with officials, leading the family to agree to take custody of the remains.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has arranged and fully funded the air ambulance transportation. Two family members will accompany the body on the flight to Varanasi, ensuring dignified handling during this difficult journey.
Compensation Accepted But Deemed "Severely Insufficient"
Sarvesh Yadav, a relative of the deceased, confirmed that the family has accepted an interim compensation package totaling Rs 45 lakh. However, he emphasized that this amount is considered "severely insufficient" to provide for the future of Ramdhan Yadav's three young daughters.
"The entire family back home is completely shaken; we had no choice but to take the body back for the last rites," Sarvesh Yadav stated. "Our local political representatives have promised their support, and we are determined to continue this fight for adequate justice through whatever means necessary."
Breakdown of Financial Assistance Provided
The administration has already disbursed immediate relief consisting of Rs 5 lakh in cash and a cheque for Rs 20 lakh. According to MMRDA officials, the total direct assistance to the family now amounts to Rs 45 lakh. This figure does not include the anticipated insurance payout, which is expected to provide an additional Rs 12 to 15 lakh in the coming days.
Medical Crisis Continues for Other Injured Workers
Meanwhile, the medical emergency persists for other victims injured in the same tragic incident. Rajkumar Yadav, aged 45, remains hospitalized in critical condition, fighting for his life. Another worker, Mahendra Yadav, underwent necessary surgery on Monday evening as part of his treatment and recovery process.
The Mumbai Metro Line 4 concrete collapse has highlighted serious safety concerns at major infrastructure projects, with this case drawing particular attention due to the victim's role as a village leader and the family's vocal demands for accountability beyond financial compensation.
