Key Leadership Changes in Indian Army
Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar, currently serving as the General Officer Commanding of 2 Corps at Ambala, has been appointed as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Southern Command. Simultaneously, Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra will take over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South-Western Command. Both officers are from the Armoured Corps and are scheduled to assume their new roles on July 1, 2026.
Lt Gen Pushkar Takes Over Southern Command
Lt Gen Pushkar will replace Lt Gen Sandeep Jain, an infantry officer who took over from Army Chief designate Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth in April 2026. The Southern Command headquarters is located in Pune. Lt Gen Pushkar is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and has commanded an armoured regiment in an operational area, a strategic independent armoured brigade, and an infantry division in the western sector during his approximately 35-year career. He also served with the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan, as defence attache in the Indian Embassy in Moscow, and as Director General Territorial Army at Army Headquarters. He is the Colonel of the 74 Armoured Regiment, also known as the Desert Hawks, which was raised at Ahmednagar in June 1972 and is equipped with T-90 main battle tanks.
Lt Gen Malhotra to Lead South-Western Command
Lt Gen Malhotra will take over the reins of the South-Western Command at Jaipur from Lt Gen Manjinder Singh, an Infantry officer who superannuates at the end of this month. Currently posted as the Chief of Staff of Eastern Command in Kolkata, Lt Gen Malhotra was commissioned into the 47th Armoured Regiment in June 1989. He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and the Advanced Command and Staff Course in the United Kingdom. He has previously commanded the 1st Armoured Division at Patiala and the 12 Corps at Jodhpur.
Family Connection and Reactions
Lt Gen Pushkar is the brother-in-law of Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor. Tharoor expressed his pride on social media, stating on his X handle on Friday: "Knowing his military brilliance, his stellar record, and his absolute dedication to the uniform, I have no doubt that he will lead with the highest distinction. It is a moment of profound pride for our entire family, and a reassuring moment for the nation, to see such an exceptional and dedicated officer ascend to a position of such monumental responsibility."
Impact and Significance
These appointments come at a time when the Indian Army is undergoing leadership transitions at key commands. The Southern Command oversees military operations in southern India, while the South-Western Command is responsible for the western sector, including areas along the border with Pakistan. The appointments of experienced Armoured Corps officers signal a focus on mechanized warfare capabilities.
