Kolkata Christians Organize Peace March Amid Concerns Over Church Attacks
Thousands of members from the Bengal Christian Council are preparing for a significant peace rally in Kolkata on Tuesday. They will walk from St Paul's Cathedral to the Mayo Road crossing near the Gandhi statue. This event aims to spread a strong message of communal harmony across the city.
Appeal for Peace and Protection
Most Revd Paritosh Canning, the moderator of the Church of North India and president of the council, has made a heartfelt appeal. He called on both the state and central governments to restore peace. His request comes after several churches and missionary institutions faced attacks in recent times.
Canning expressed deep pain over two contrasting scenes. He recalled being present at Delhi Cathedral on December 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended and prayed there. The community prayed for him as well. On the other hand, churches are being attacked in various parts of the country. Both situations cause great distress for Christians.
The prime minister's visit to the church and his prayers could send a new message of unity in India. Perhaps he believes everyone should stay together. Canning shared this thought with reporters at Bishop's House on Monday.
Memorandum to Prime Minister Modi
The council plans to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Modi within two days after the rally. They will send it through the governor. The document will request immediate steps to protect minorities who are under attack. Organizers expect around 15,000 participants to join the rally tomorrow.
Thanks to CM Mamata Banerjee
Canning also thanked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her support. He appreciated her efforts in upholding Bengal's centuries-old traditions. She promotes unity in diversity. Her government has provided minority status for schools and staff appointment rules. This action helps the Christian community in the state.
Support for Christians in Other States
The Bengal Christian Council aims to encourage Christians from other states to come forward. They want to join hands wherever needed. Many places face destruction of churches and attacks on Christians. While Bengal enjoys peace, brothers and sisters in other states suffer. The council plans to stand beside them through collective action.
Administrative Challenges in Schools
Canning highlighted administrative issues affecting Christian-run schools across West Bengal. These problems impact the studies of children from underprivileged backgrounds. The council seeks a peaceful environment for work. They want cooperation from the DI office in Kolkata to run their institutions smoothly.
The peace rally represents a call for solidarity and protection. It underscores the need for harmony in a diverse nation.
