Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the state government will unveil a comprehensive long-term water supply plan for Ichalkaranji, a city often referred to as the 'Manchester of Maharashtra'. The announcement was made on 19 June 2026.
Addressing Water Scarcity
The water plan aims to address the persistent water scarcity issues in the region, which is a major hub for textile and manufacturing industries. Fadnavis emphasized that the project would ensure sustainable water availability for both domestic and industrial use.
Key Highlights of the Plan
- Development of new water sources and reservoirs.
- Upgradation of existing water distribution infrastructure.
- Implementation of water conservation and recycling measures.
- Collaboration with local municipal bodies and industries.
The CM stated that the plan would be prepared in consultation with experts and stakeholders, with a focus on long-term sustainability. Ichalkaranji, located in Kolhapur district, has a significant textile industry, and the water plan is expected to boost economic growth in the region.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over water shortages in several parts of Maharashtra. The state government has been taking steps to improve water management, including the recent launch of the 'Jalyukt Shivar' scheme.
