Congress Leaders Accuse BJP and LDF of Covert Alliance in Kerala Elections
In a significant escalation of political rhetoric ahead of the Kerala assembly polls, All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge and opposition leader in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have launched scathing allegations of secret collaboration between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The accusations were made during the formal launch of the United Democratic Front's (UDF) election campaign at a massive rally on Kozhikode Beach.
Kharge's Direct Allegation: Every BJP Vote Helps LDF
Inaugurating the UDF's mega rally, Kharge made the explosive claim that the BJP has deliberately fielded weak candidates in multiple constituencies across Kerala. He asserted that this strategic move is designed not to secure victory for the saffron party but to indirectly assist the LDF in retaining power. "Every vote for BJP is essentially a vote gifted to LDF," Kharge declared, suggesting that the BJP's electoral participation in Kerala is fundamentally disingenuous.
Kharge elaborated that the BJP's apparent lack of competitive candidates in key seats reveals a deeper, unspoken understanding with the ruling front. This allegation strikes at the heart of Kerala's political dynamics, where the Congress-led UDF has traditionally positioned itself as the primary alternative to the Communist-led LDF.
Rahul Gandhi's Virtual Address Echoes Collusion Claims
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who addressed the gathering virtually after skipping the event due to his mother Sonia Gandhi's hospitalization, reinforced Kharge's allegations with pointed questions. "Only two fronts are genuinely fighting in Kerala," Rahul stated. "One is the UDF alliance, and the other is a partnership between BJP and LDF."
Rahul challenged the BJP-led central government's selective targeting of opposition figures, asking why Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has faced comparatively little scrutiny from central investigative agencies. "I want to ask the people of Kerala why BJP does not attack CM Vijayan. Why are the cases against him not progressing? This is the clearest proof of collusion between BJP and LDF," he argued.
Policy Parallels and Temple Controversy Cited as Evidence
Rahul Gandhi further alleged that the policies of the LDF government have become indistinguishable from those of the BJP, a claim he said is supported by "real Left leaders" who are contesting against the LDF. He emphasized that both parties operate without genuine accountability to the people of Kerala.
To bolster his argument, Rahul referenced the Sabarimala temple controversy, noting that multiple CPM leaders have been arrested for allegedly stealing kilograms of gold from the shrine. "How can a government that shows such disrespect to Lord Ayyappa truly respect the people of Kerala?" he questioned, linking the incident to broader patterns of governance.
Internal Controversy Over Campaign Materials
The UDF rally was not without its own internal discord. A controversy erupted when some party activists protested the distribution of caps featuring the image of senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala. Critics argued that this promoted individual personality over the collective leadership of the party and the front.
This incident occurs amid existing tensions within the Congress regarding potential chief ministerial candidates should the UDF secure victory in the May elections. The debate over leadership highlights the challenges the opposition faces in presenting a united front against the alleged BJP-LDF alliance.
The allegations made by Kharge and Rahul Gandhi represent a strategic attempt by the Congress to frame the upcoming Kerala assembly elections as a direct contest between the UDF and a covert BJP-LDF partnership. By questioning the BJP's electoral intentions and highlighting perceived investigative leniency towards the LDF, the Congress aims to consolidate anti-incumbency votes and position itself as the sole credible alternative in Kerala's political landscape.
