Opposition Leaders Launch Scathing Attack on Kerala Government Over Healthcare Crisis and Financial Mismanagement
In a fiery address at a rally in Aluva on Friday, Opposition Leader V D Satheesan delivered a blistering critique of Kerala's healthcare system, declaring it to be "on a ventilator" due to severe financial mismanagement and systemic neglect. The rally was part of the ongoing Puthu Yuga Yatra led by Satheesan, where he emphatically stated that the once-celebrated 'Kerala Model' of healthcare has completely collapsed under the current administration.
Harrowing Cases of Medical Negligence Highlight Systemic Failures
Satheesan pointed to specific, distressing incidents to underscore his claims. He cited the case of a woman at Alappuzha Medical College who had surgical equipment left inside her abdomen, as well as the prolonged suffering of Harshina, who endured years with forceps lodged in her body. "These tragic examples validate our assertion that the state's health system is critically ill and requires immediate intervention," Satheesan asserted.
He condemned the health department for hiding behind bureaucratic reports while victims continue to suffer, emphasizing that the opposition has been compelled to step in. The United Democratic Front (UDF) has reportedly begun funding the medical expenses of individuals abandoned by the state system. Furthermore, Satheesan criticized the government's "lethargic attitude" toward the indefinite strike by medical college doctors, urging prompt dialogue to resolve the deadlock.
Demands for Accountability in Sabarimala Priest Arrest and Infrastructure Promises
Beyond healthcare, Satheesan addressed other controversies, demanding accountability for the 41-day "illegal arrest" of the Sabarimala head priest in connection with a gold heist case. Referencing the court's observation that there were no grounds for the arrest, he insisted that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) must be held answerable for this overreach.
On local issues, Satheesan pledged to complete the Seaport-Airport Road on a war footing to alleviate chronic congestion in Aluva, highlighting his commitment to resolving logistical bottlenecks that plague the region.
Congress Leader Accuses Government of Treasury Looting for Electoral Gains
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala launched a separate attack, accusing the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government of "looting the state treasury" to fuel ambitions for a third consecutive term. Addressing reporters in Aluva, Chennithala alleged that Rs 20 crore from the Information and Public Relations Department is being misused under the guise of the 'Navakerala Survey' to deploy DYFI workers for door-to-door electioneering.
He further claimed that an additional Rs 150 crore from Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) funds is being diverted solely for election advertisements. "Officials, including the chief secretary, must not be complicit in these illegal and anti-democratic maneuvers. When the government changes, those responsible will have to answer for their actions," Chennithala warned.
Confidence in UDF Victory and Condemnation of Divisive Narratives
Expressing absolute confidence, Chennithala predicted that the UDF would return to power with a thumping majority of 100 seats in the upcoming elections. He also condemned the movie 'The Kerala Story 2', labeling it as part of a lobby intended to incite communal hatred and division within society.
Taking a dig at former Union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, Chennithala dismissed him as a "hired voice" with no place in the party. "Aiyar and others like him are individuals whose time has passed. They have no role in this party and are not part of our organization," he stated firmly, reinforcing the party's stance against external influences.
The combined critiques from Satheesan and Chennithala underscore a mounting opposition offensive against the Kerala government, focusing on healthcare failures, financial irregularities, and broader governance issues as the state approaches a critical electoral period.
