Kerala Chief Minister Addresses Tragic Student Suicide Amid Caste Discrimination Concerns
In a significant development, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has voiced serious concerns following the death of Nithin Raj, a first-year BDS student from Uzhamalackal in Thiruvananthapuram. The incident, which occurred on Friday, has sparked allegations of caste-based discrimination at the private medical college in Anjarakandy, Kannur, where Raj was studying.
CM Vijayan Calls for Scrutiny and Social Reflection
Chief Minister Vijayan, in a social media post commemorating the birth anniversary of reformer B.R. Ambedkar, described the details emerging after Raj's suicide as unacceptable for a progressive state like Kerala. He emphasized that such reports warrant closer examination to determine if the societal values Kerala has long upheld are weakening.
"It is time to examine whether the values Kerala has upheld as a society are weakening," Vijayan stated, highlighting the ongoing relevance of Ambedkar's fight against caste divisions and for social justice.
Demand for Legislative Action and Support for the Family
Vijayan reiterated his demand for implementing a law to address caste discrimination on educational campuses, specifically referring to the proposed Rohith Vemula Act. This act is named after the PhD student at the University of Hyderabad who died by suicide in 2016, a case that drew national attention to similar issues.
The Chief Minister noted that the Central government has not acted on this demand to date. He also mentioned that the Supreme Court has stayed guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission on this matter, underscoring the need for a robust legal framework.
Describing Nithin Raj as a meritorious student, Vijayan asserted that those responsible for driving him to such a tragic end, if any, have committed an unpardonable offence. He assured that the state stands firmly with Raj's family during this difficult time.

In his message, Vijayan called for a united societal response to combat discrimination. He urged people to work together to strengthen the values of equality and social justice, aligning with Ambedkar's lifelong mission.
