Kerala Cabinet Approves Comprehensive Relief Measures for Landslide-Affected Shop Owners in Wayanad
The Kerala state cabinet has given its approval to a series of significant measures aimed at providing relief and support to individuals and businesses impacted by the devastating landslide at Meppadi in Wayanad. Among the key decisions, the cabinet has sanctioned compensation packages for shop owners whose establishments were destroyed or damaged in the natural disaster.
Compensation Details for Affected Shop Owners
According to an official statement released from Thiruvananthapuram, shop owners who have suffered complete destruction of their shops will receive compensation of Rs 7 lakh per shop. This compensation amount is uniform and applies regardless of the type or structure of the shop, ensuring equitable support for all affected entrepreneurs.
In cases where a shop owner has lost more than one shop due to the landslide, the cabinet has approved an additional compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh for each extra shop. This provision aims to address the compounded losses faced by business owners with multiple establishments in the affected area.
Business Revival Assistance for Entrepreneurs
To facilitate the restarting of businesses disrupted by the landslide, the cabinet has also sanctioned compensation for entrepreneurs. This assistance will be calculated as either 50% of the incurred loss or a maximum specified amount, whichever is applicable. The maximum compensation limits vary by sector:
- Manufacturing sector: Up to Rs 20 lakh
- Service sector: Up to Rs 10 lakh
- Trade sector: Up to Rs 7 lakh
This targeted support is designed to help entrepreneurs recover and rebuild their livelihoods in the aftermath of the disaster.
Funding and Implementation
The funds required for these compensation measures will be allocated from the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund and will be disbursed through the Wayanad district collector. This streamlined approach ensures that financial aid reaches the affected individuals promptly and efficiently.
Additional Cabinet Decisions
In addition to the landslide relief measures, the Kerala cabinet made several other important decisions. These include the approval for the formation of the 'Kottoor Elephant Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre Society', which will be responsible for operating the centre dedicated to elephant welfare and conservation.
Furthermore, the cabinet sanctioned 65 posts for the Kannur International Ayurveda Research Centre to support its first phase of work. This move underscores the state's commitment to promoting Ayurveda research and development, aligning with broader health and wellness initiatives.
