Union Minister V Somanna Slams Karnataka Government for Railway Project Delays
Union Minister V Somanna has publicly criticized the Karnataka state government for causing significant setbacks to railway projects across the state. According to Somanna, the primary obstacle is the state's lack of cooperation in land acquisition processes, which has stalled numerous initiatives despite substantial central funding and allocations.
Belagavi-Dharwad Railway Line Faces Major Hurdles
Specifically, the long-awaited 73-kilometre Belagavi-Kittur-Dharwad railway project remains in limbo, pending the acquisition of 55 acres of land. Somanna emphasized that while legacy projects continue to move forward, timely land handover is absolutely crucial for the Railway department to utilize allocated funds and complete modern infrastructure upgrades throughout Karnataka.
Speaking to media during a budget analysis session on Saturday, Somanna described the Karnataka government's attitude as one of "indifference" that is actively hindering construction progress. He revealed that he has personally met with state ministers and officials multiple times to discuss the stalled railway projects, but has received no meaningful response or cooperation from the state administration.
Potential Legal Action and Upcoming Meetings
The Union Minister announced plans to meet with the state chief secretary soon for further discussions. However, he issued a stern warning that if the Karnataka government continues to ignore these critical infrastructure needs, legal action will be pursued under appropriate statutes to ensure project completion.
"The Railway department has funds allocated and ready for use, but without the necessary land from the state government, we cannot proceed with these vital infrastructure projects," Somanna stated during his media interaction.
Budget Analysis and Development Vision
Somanna also addressed the 2026 Union Budget, describing it not merely as a one-year financial calculation but as a comprehensive visionary plan aimed at transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. He highlighted key allocations including Rs 7.8 lakh crore for defense, Rs 1.6 lakh crore for agriculture, Rs 1.3 lakh crore for education, Rs 7,748 crore for state railway projects, and Rs 8,559 crore for disaster management.
The Minister dismissed claims from Congress leaders that Karnataka has been treated unfairly by the Central government, calling such statements "baseless" and pointing to the substantial funding already allocated for state projects.
Local Railway Developments and Language Policy
In Belagavi specifically, opposition has emerged regarding construction of a lower bridge at the 4th railway gate. Meanwhile, several development projects are underway including the Desuru-Belagavi railway (Rs 32 crore), Belagavi-Sambra station (Rs 40 crore), and Khanapur-Desur railway station (Rs 17 crore).
Somanna noted that out of seven railway gates in this section, two works have been inaugurated while five remain in progress, all requiring continued support from state government officials.
On language policy, the Minister confirmed that Kannada has been permitted in Railway department examinations, with the central government approving the use of respective state languages in testing. However, he cautioned that while regional languages are supported, proficiency in English and Hindi remains important for future career advancement within the railway system.
Political Presence at Announcement
The announcement was attended by several prominent political figures including Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi, former MP Ramesh Katti, former MLA Arvind Patil, former MLC Mahantesh Kavatagimath, BJP city unit president Geeta Sutar, rural President Subhash Patil, corporator Hanumant Kongali, and Rajashekhar Doni.
The gathering underscored the political significance of railway infrastructure development in Karnataka and highlighted the growing tension between state and central authorities over implementation of critical transportation projects.
