Kanpur District Magistrate Uncovers Voter List Negligence During Surprise Booth Inspections
In a significant development for electoral preparedness, Booth Day was organized across 3,770 booths in Kanpur district on Sunday as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign for voter list updates. The event aimed to streamline the revision process and ensure accuracy in the electoral rolls, but a surprise inspection by District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh revealed concerning lapses in implementation.
Surprise Checks at Key Locations Expose Operational Gaps
During his unannounced visit, the DM first inspected booth numbers 17 to 24 at Guru Nanak Model School in the Kalyanpur Assembly constituency. Here, he interacted with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and citizens, conducting a practical review of the revision procedures to assess on-ground efficiency. The inspection was part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability in the voter enrollment process.
However, the situation took a serious turn when Singh moved to inspect booth numbers 40, 41, and 42 at Upper Primary School in Singhpur Kachhar, under the Bithoor Assembly constituency. To his dismay, he discovered that none of the voter forms at these booths were completely filled or properly fed into the system, highlighting a critical failure in the revision campaign's execution.
Strict Actions and Directives Issued to Rectify Lapses
Taking serious note of the negligence, District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh directed immediate corrective measures. He ordered that a show-cause notice be issued to the concerned BLO responsible for the incomplete forms, while also issuing a stern warning to the supervisor overseeing the booths. This move underscores the administration's commitment to maintaining electoral integrity and ensuring that officials adhere to prescribed protocols.
Furthermore, the DM directed the concerned Electoral Registration Officer and SDM Sadar to conduct comprehensive inspections of all booths in the district. He emphasized the mandatory pasting of draft voter lists at every location to facilitate public verification and participation. In addition, all Electoral Registration Officers were instructed to ensure that draft voter lists are made available at every booth, reinforcing the importance of accessibility and transparency in the electoral process.
