In a significant pre-election crackdown, income tax authorities, supported by election flying squad teams, police personnel, and paramilitary forces, executed extensive searches across the Salem North constituency on Tuesday. The coordinated operation targeted premises associated with individuals reportedly close to Tourism Minister R Rajendran, aiming to disrupt alleged financial malpractices ahead of the crucial April 23 polls.
Intelligence Points to Large-Scale Cash Movements
According to senior income tax department sources, the searches were initiated based on specific intelligence indicating that substantial sums of money were being clandestinely stockpiled within the constituency. The operation focused on verifying leads related to potential cash distribution networks designed to influence voter behavior through illicit means.
A senior income tax officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed: "We received credible and actionable information regarding large-scale cash movements in Salem North. Our specialized teams are meticulously verifying every lead to ensure that monetary power does not undermine the integrity of the electoral process."
Targeted Searches on DMK Functionaries and Properties
The income tax sleuths conducted thorough inspections at multiple residential and commercial properties linked to DMK functionaries. Key individuals scrutinized include Tamilarasan, the DMK's Kannankurichi town secretary, and ATC Mani, a labour union zonal secretary. Additionally, officials searched rented houses suspected of being utilized as covert supply points for distributing cash and materials to voters.
Another officer involved in the operation stated: "We are conducting comprehensive searches at locations reportedly used as distribution hubs. Our surveillance and monitoring efforts will remain intensified and continuous right up until polling day to prevent any unlawful activities."
Allegations of Cash and Goods Funneling Emerge
Disturbing reports have surfaced alleging that a real estate owner based in Vazhapadi orchestrated the funneling of approximately Rs 40 crore, along with luxury items such as silk saris and other goods, into the Salem North constituency. These resources were purportedly intended for systematic distribution to voters to sway electoral outcomes. Income tax officials confirmed that detailed inquiries into these allegations are currently underway, with forensic analysis of financial transactions being prioritized.
The Election Commission of India has reiterated its commitment to conducting free and fair elections, emphasizing zero tolerance for the use of money power.
