Senior Advocate HS Phoolka Joins BJP, Strengthening Party's Sikh Outreach Ahead of Punjab Elections
In a significant political development, senior advocate HS Phoolka, a former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA renowned for his decades-long legal battle for 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. This move is seen as a strategic boost to the BJP's outreach efforts to the Sikh community in Punjab, with assembly elections scheduled for early next year.
Phoolka's Political Background and Criticism of Punjab Government
HS Phoolka served as the leader of the opposition in the Punjab assembly during its previous term, when AAP emerged as the second-largest party after Congress. In his public statements, Phoolka has been scathing in his denunciation of the current Punjab government, led by AAP, citing alleged issues such as crime and extortion, a rampant drug menace, and widespread corruption. He asserted that only the BJP possesses the capability to "save" the border state from these challenges, emphasizing the party's potential to bring stability and development to Punjab.
Goodwill Among Sikhs and Legal Contributions
Although not a conventional politician, Phoolka has concentrated largely on his legal practice, which has earned him considerable goodwill among Sikhs. This reputation provides the BJP with a valuable bridge to connect with the Sikh community in Punjab, enhancing the party's credibility and appeal in the region. Phoolka highlighted his long-standing legal assistance to the BJP in riot-related cases, noting that this collaboration has now culminated in his decision to formally join the party.
Recalling 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots and Praising BJP Leadership
During the announcement, Phoolka recalled the tragic killings of Sikhs during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, describing it as a genocide. He was effusive in his praise for the BJP brass, particularly former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and senior leader Madan Lal Khurana, for their support and assistance to the Sikh community during that period. Phoolka stressed that the targeting was by Congress and not Hindus, acknowledging the help rendered by several Hindus in the aftermath of the violence.
This move by Phoolka is expected to resonate strongly in Punjab's political landscape, as it combines his legal advocacy with BJP's electoral strategy, potentially influencing voter sentiment in the upcoming elections.
