Bridge Collapses in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh
A bridge in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district collapsed like a house of cards while a truck was crossing it, with CCTV footage of the incident surfacing online. The incident occurred on the Reckong Peo-Kaza road, a key route in the region. The truck driver managed to escape with minor injuries, according to local officials.
CCTV Footage Captures Dramatic Collapse
The CCTV footage shows the truck slowly making its way across the bridge when suddenly the structure gives way, crumbling into the gorge below. The truck is seen plunging with the debris, but the driver's cabin remains partially intact. Local authorities confirmed that the driver was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital.
Bridge Was Under Repair, Says Official
According to Kinnaur Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq, the bridge was under repair and had been closed for heavy vehicles. However, the truck driver apparently ignored the warning signs. “The bridge was already weakened due to recent rains and was being repaired. The driver took a risk by crossing it,” Sadiq said.
Impact on Local Connectivity
The collapse has severely impacted connectivity in the region, as the bridge was a vital link for several villages. Authorities have diverted traffic to alternative routes. A team of engineers has been deployed to assess the damage and plan for reconstruction.
Similar Incidents Raise Safety Concerns
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of aging infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh. In the past year, several bridges and roads have been damaged due to heavy monsoon rains and landslides. The state government has announced a review of all bridges in the region.
