Speaking at a gathering organized by the Media Well Being Association at the Kingfisher Tourist Complex in Ambala, Minister Vij articulated that journalism serves as one of the four essential pillars of democracy, alongside the legislature, executive, and judiciary.

Minister Vij underscored that any weakening of these pillars, particularly the media, could destabilize the entire democratic framework. He described journalists as crucial bridges connecting the government with society, emphasizing their duty to function like vigilant CCTV cameras. This involves monitoring societal activities closely, conveying public concerns to authorities, and disseminating information about government achievements and welfare policies to citizens.
Challenges in the Digital Age
Reflecting on the transformative impact of the digital revolution, Vij acknowledged that modern technology has empowered journalism by accelerating information flow. With smartphones and internet access, news now reaches global audiences within seconds. However, he cautioned that this power brings heightened responsibility, as threats like fake news, paid news, and clickbait journalism pose serious risks to democratic values and journalistic credibility.
Vij stressed the need for journalists to adapt to new technologies through continuous training and capacity-building programs, similar to those in government departments. He advocated for experienced professionals to guide journalists in adopting innovative tools and techniques to strengthen the profession further.
Welfare Initiatives for Journalists
Demonstrating the Haryana government's commitment to press welfare, Minister Vij announced several supportive measures. He allocated financial assistance of Rs 31 lakh from his discretionary fund for the Media Well Being Association's activities. Additionally, he highlighted existing initiatives, including a monthly pension of Rs 15,000 for accredited journalists, 4,000 kilometers of free bus travel, and accident insurance schemes. Vij also expressed support for establishing a dedicated budget head for journalists' welfare.
Condemning Attacks on Press Freedom
In a firm stance against recent incidents in Punjab, Vij condemned any attacks on press freedom as direct assaults on democracy. He called for nationwide opposition to such actions to prevent future violations and uphold media independence. Recalling journalism's historic role from the freedom struggle to the Emergency period, Vij noted that its core objective has always been nation-building while fulfilling social responsibilities.
Engagement with Journalistic Community
During the event, Vij engaged directly with journalists' concerns, assuring that meetings with transport department officials would be held to address travel facility issues in Haryana Roadways buses. He distributed accident insurance policy certificates and excellence awards to journalists, recognizing their contributions. The program saw participation from senior editors, association office-bearers, and journalists across the region, reflecting broad support for press welfare and freedom.
