Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi led the commemorations, visiting Singh's residence at 24, Akbar Road in New Delhi to offer floral tributes. Gandhi reflected on Singh's legacy, stating his policy decisions profoundly benefited the poor and underprivileged sections of society. He emphasized that Singh's humility and dedication to hard work continue to serve as a guiding inspiration.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge honored Singh as a transformative figure who fundamentally altered the trajectory of India's economy. Kharge credited Singh's visionary reforms with creating vast opportunities and lifting millions of Indians out of poverty.
Tharoor's Video Tribute Highlights Decency and Conviction
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared a poignant video message, describing Dr. Singh as an "erudite and deeply decent leader." Tharoor noted that Singh's quiet demeanor often conveyed more substance than the prevailing political noise.
"Today the nation pauses to mark a solemn milestone," Tharoor said, highlighting the enduring void in India's intellectual and moral landscape. He remembered Singh as an "accidental politician but a very conscious patriot" whose tenure was defined by firm conviction, exemplified by his commitment to the landmark civil nuclear deal that elevated India's global standing.
Tharoor also underscored that Singh's legacy extends beyond economic metrics. He pointed to the foundational rights-based framework established during his tenure, including the Right to Information Act, the Right to Education Act, MGNREGA (the right to work), and the Right to Food Security Act.
Cross-Party Respect for a Statesman
Respect for the former Prime Minister transcended political lines. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath posted a tribute on X, acknowledging Singh's "invaluable contributions to the nation's development" both as Finance Minister and Prime Minister.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, NCP MP Supriya Sule, and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar were among the many leaders from various parties who expressed their remembrance.
Born in 1932, Dr. Manmohan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. An eminent economist, he previously held the crucial positions of Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Union Finance Minister. He passed away last year at the age of 92.
