Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Advocates Shift in Historical Narratives at Agra Fort Event
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking at Agra Fort during the commemoration of the 396th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, declared a significant transformation in India's approach to history education. He emphasized that in contemporary India, there is a deliberate move away from glorifying Mughal figures, with names no longer being bestowed after them and statues not being erected in their honor.
Educational Reforms Highlight Maratha Legacy
Fadnavis elaborated on the evolution of history textbooks, noting that previously, Maratha history was condensed into a mere paragraph, whereas it now occupies at least twenty pages. He contrasted this with the past, where educational materials were heavily saturated with Mughal history, suggesting an imbalance that is being rectified to provide a more comprehensive view of India's past.
The chief minister connected Shivaji Maharaj's foundational principles of 'swarajya' or self-rule, established four centuries ago, to the current national leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He asserted that Maharaj's life, ideals, courage, and governance model are being systematically integrated into the educational curriculum. Joint Memorial Project Progresses in Agra
Expressing satisfaction, Fadnavis highlighted the collaborative efforts between the Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh governments to construct a grand memorial dedicated to the Maratha ruler. The land acquisition process in Agra, the city renowned for the Taj Mahal, is nearing its final stages, signaling tangible progress on this ambitious project.
During the 'Shivjanmotsav Sampurn Bharatvarsh Ka 2026' event held on Thursday night, Fadnavis recalled that on the previous anniversary, there was a collective aspiration to develop the site where Shivaji Maharaj was held captive and from which he executed a daring escape using guerrilla tactics into a magnificent memorial. He acknowledged the formal request made to the Uttar Pradesh government for this purpose.
Fadnavis extended gratitude to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the cabinet decision that facilitated the land acquisition, expressing confidence that construction activities would commence in the upcoming year. Officials with access to detailed plans indicated that the proposed memorial is slated to be established at the Kothi Meena Bazar ground in Agra, adding a new historical landmark to the city's rich tapestry.
Future Celebrations Planned at Agra Fort
Looking ahead, Fadnavis announced that in 2030, which marks the 400th birth anniversary of Shivaji Maharaj, a grand celebration will be organized at Agra Fort under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
