Congress Intensifies Statewide Agitation Over LPG Price Increase
The Indian National Congress launched a series of statewide protests in Maharashtra, vehemently opposing the recent hike in LPG cylinder prices. The demonstrations, organized by the party's state unit, saw participation from multiple districts and towns, with demands for an immediate rollback of the increase and a formal policy address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament.

Protests erupted in numerous locations, including major cities like Nagpur, Pune, Thane, and Palghar, as well as smaller towns such as Tiroda, Bhiwandi, Kalyan-Dombivli, Dharashiv, Rajura in Chandrapur district, and Panvel. Additional demonstrations were reported in Wardha, Buldhana, and Gondia, highlighting the broad reach of the agitation. The Congress has declared that this movement will persist until the government addresses the escalating fuel prices and ensures a reliable supply of LPG cylinders to consumers.
Leadership Demands and Criticisms
Addressing a protest at Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district, Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal condemned the Rs. 60 increase in LPG cylinder prices, arguing that it exacerbates inflationary pressures on ordinary citizens. He attributed the rise to what he described as "wrong policies" of the Central government. Sapkal emphasized, "Instead of citing war as a reason and burdening the people, the government must immediately roll back the LPG price hike." He urged the Prime Minister to engage in discussions with all stakeholders to find a sustainable solution.
Allegations of Supply Shortages and Economic Strain
Sapkal further alleged that the country is grappling with a dual crisis of rising prices and supply shortages. He pointed out that small businesses, including hotels and eateries, are particularly affected due to difficulties in obtaining commercial cylinders. This, he claimed, adds to the economic hardships faced by the common populace. The protests underscore growing discontent over fuel affordability and availability, with the Congress positioning itself as a vocal critic of the government's handling of the issue.
