Congress Files Police Complaint Over AI Video Targeting Assam Chief Minister

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has taken legal action by filing a First Information Report (FIR) at the Dispur Police Station in Guwahati. The complaint targets an artificial intelligence-generated video that was recently posted on the official X handle of the Assam BJP unit.

Controversial Content and Swift Deletion

The video, which has since been deleted following widespread controversy, allegedly depicted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma firing a rifle at members of the minority community. The disturbing footage showed Sarma purportedly taking aim and shooting at two individuals—one wearing a skull cap and the other sporting a beard—with the caption reading "point-blank shot."

According to the FIR, this "highly provocative content" was shared on February 7 through the BJP Assam Pradesh's official X account (@BJP4Assam). The complaint specifically states that the video symbolically showed CM Sarma firing at Muslims at point-blank range, accompanied by inflammatory captions including "foreigner free Assam," "No mercy," "Why did you not go to Pakistan?" and "There is no forgiveness to Bangladeshis."

Congress Allegations and Legal Demands

The police complaint letter, formally signed by Congress MLAs Diganta Barman and Sibamoni Bora, demands the immediate arrest of Chief Minister Sarma. At the time of filing this report, police had not yet registered a formal case based on the complaint.

Congress has alleged that the content deliberately targeted the state's minority Muslim community with "malicious intent." The FIR further contends that circulating such AI-generated material aims to humiliate and provoke a specific community, potentially disturbing social harmony and creating an atmosphere of hatred and tension.

"The aforesaid content targeting a particular community is highly provocative and communal, which will definitely lead to social disharmony amongst people," stated the official FIR document.

Chief Minister's Defiant Response

Reacting to the FIR, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remained defiant in his comments to media personnel. "You all know against whom I am. What will happen to me if they lodge a complaint against me? For me, black is black and white is white," Sarma declared.

The chief minister added, "Congress people cannot frighten me. Let Sibamoni Bora, Diganta Barman, or even their malik Rahul Gandhi lodge a complaint against me," while showing his thumb to Congress leaders on camera.

Political Delegation and Further Demands

During the FIR filing, the two Congress MLAs were accompanied by Bedabrat Bora, chairman of the APCC's Media and Communication Department, and Gopal Sharma, the state coordinator. Following the formal complaint submission, the APCC demanded that authorities register a case under appropriate sections of penal law.

Bedabrat Bora raised serious questions about the video's intent, asking whether the state BJP was attempting to portray the chief minister as a "gun-wielding terrorist" through such controversial content.

The incident highlights growing concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence technology in political communication and its potential to exacerbate communal tensions in sensitive regions.
