The Indian National Congress is poised to complete its candidate selection process for the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. According to state unit president K Selvaperunthagai, a significant 85 percent of the candidate names have already been determined, with the remaining decisions to be made at a Central Election Committee meeting in Delhi.

High-Level Discussions Conclude Majority of Selections

Selvaperunthagai revealed that extensive discussions involving senior party leaders, including All India Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, have largely concluded. The DMK has allocated the majority of seats to itself, deciding to field candidates in 164 of the total 234 Assembly seats, while distributing the remaining 70 seats among its coalition partners.

Comprehensive Alliance Seat Distribution

The alliance structure includes several key partners with specific seat allocations:

  • Communist Party of India (CPI): 5 seats
  • Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M): 5 seats
  • Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK): 8 seats
  • Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK): 4 seats
  • Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK): 10 seats
  • Indian Union Muslim League (IUML): 2 seats

Additionally, several smaller regional parties complete the alliance framework.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin has already unveiled candidates for numerous significant constituencies. Stalin himself will contest from Kolathur, while Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has been fielded from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni.

The primary electoral battle in Tamil Nadu is expected between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which includes the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Pattali Makkal Katchi.

A recent survey conducted by polling agency Lok Poll projects a strong performance for the DMK alliance, estimating between 181 to 189 seats with a vote share of 40.1 percent. In contrast, the AIADMK-led alliance was projected to secure 38 to 42 seats.

Election Schedule and Key Dates

Tamil Nadu will conduct its Assembly elections in a single phase on April 23, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. Important electoral deadlines include:

  • Last date for filing nominations: April 6
  • Scrutiny of nominations: April 7
  • Withdrawal of nominations: Until April 9

With candidate lists nearing completion and alliances firmly established, political parties across Tamil Nadu are entering the final preparatory phase for what promises to be a closely monitored and significant electoral contest in the southern state.
