BJD MP Sasmit Patra Urges Centre to Prioritize Southern Odisha Infrastructure
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MP Sasmit Patra has made a fervent appeal to the central government, urging it to prioritize and expedite critical infrastructure projects in southern Odisha. Raising the issue during the zero hour in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, Patra emphasized that the holistic development of the region is essential for the state's overall progress.
Focus on Seven Key Districts
Patra specifically highlighted seven districts in southern Odisha that require immediate attention: Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Nabarangpur, and Malkangiri. He stressed that strengthening railway links, national highways, and air connectivity in these areas is crucial for unlocking their economic potential and ensuring balanced regional growth.
Detailed Infrastructure Demands
The MP outlined several key demands to boost infrastructure in the region:
- Railway and Highway Projects: Patra called for faster execution of ongoing railway and national highway projects across the seven districts, noting that delays are hindering development and connectivity.
- Air Connectivity Enhancements: He urged the immediate commissioning of the Rangeilunda airport near Berhampur and consistent operations at the Jeypore and Malkangiri airports, which currently suffer from erratic schedules and frequent cancellations.
- Eco-Tourism Potential: Patra also proposed exploring the development of smaller airstrips in other districts to boost eco-tourism, arguing that improved air access could attract more visitors and stimulate local economies.
Urgent Call to Action
In his address, Patra underscored that the development of southern Odisha is not just a regional issue but a critical component of the state's overall growth strategy. He urged the Union government to prioritize these infrastructure projects without any further delay, warning that inaction could perpetuate economic disparities and hinder progress.
The MP's appeal reflects growing concerns about infrastructure gaps in remote areas and highlights the need for coordinated efforts between state and central authorities to drive inclusive development in Odisha.
