In a move that has ignited fresh political tensions, senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Sunday sparked controversy by publicly praising Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and expressing hope for the continuation of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in the upcoming state assembly elections. Speaking at an international seminar titled "Vision 2031: Development and Democracy," Aiyar made remarks that have drawn sharp reactions. He directly addressed Chief Minister Vijayan, stating, "I must fall at your feet, Chief Minister Vijayan, and request you to pick up the baton that the Congress has dropped." Aiyar emphasized his confidence that Vijayan would continue in office, adding, "Thank you, and may Kerala prosper."
He highlighted what he described as an ironic situation, noting that Kerala, under a Marxist-Leninist party, has made the most commendable progress towards development goals. Aiyar expressed regret over the absence of his Congress colleagues at the event, which he termed a state and national occasion. He pointed out that while Kerala leads in panchayati raj in practice, it ranks only second in law, urging amendments based on practical experience and expert insights.

Congress national spokesperson Pawan Khera asserted that Aiyar has had no connection with the Congress for several years and speaks purely in a personal capacity.
In a post on social media platform X, Khera clarified, "Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyar has had no connection whatsoever with the Congress for the past few years. He speaks and writes purely in his personal capacity." This disavowal aims to mitigate any potential electoral fallout as the party vies for power in Kerala.
Adding to the rebuke, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh dismissed Aiyar's statements and expressed confidence in the UDF's return to power. "Let there be no doubt. The people of Kerala will bring the UDF back for more responsible and responsive governance. They also know the LDF and BJP are covert partners," Ramesh stated, highlighting the political stakes ahead of the elections.
