6.2-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Afghanistan
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan on Saturday, June 27, 2026, according to seismic monitoring agencies. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred 43 kilometers south of Jurm in the northeastern province of Badakhshan at a depth of 215 kilometers. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) in India confirmed the earthquake hit at 7:04 PM local time.
Strong Tremors Felt Across Pakistan and Northern India
Strong tremors were felt in Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi, and several other north Indian states on Saturday evening. In Pakistan, the earthquake was felt in major cities including Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, though no immediate reports of casualties or damage emerged from these areas. Similarly, in India, residents of Delhi-NCR reported feeling the ground shake, but authorities have not reported any damage or injuries.
Series of Moderate Quakes in Balochistan
This event follows a series of at least five moderate-intensity earthquakes that have struck Pakistan's southeastern province of Balochistan since Friday. The latest of these jolted Barkhan and adjoining areas on Saturday morning. Authorities reported five injuries and damage to some houses from these earthquakes, which measured between magnitudes 5.2 and 4.3 on the Richter scale.
Pakistan Meteorological Department's Chief Meteorologist Ameer Haider Leghari commented on the sequence, stating, "The quakes occurred on a fault line and could be the result of major earthquakes that have taken place globally." He specifically referenced twin earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that hit Venezuela on June 25, killing at least 920 people, leaving more than 51,000 missing, and causing widespread damage. Leghari added, "The massive earthquake in Venezuela could have created the release of energy to other fault lines and because Balochistan is on a fault line, there could be more jolts."
No Immediate Reports of Casualties or Damage
As of Saturday evening, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan. The deep epicenter at 215 kilometers likely reduced the potential for surface damage. However, authorities in all affected regions remain on alert for aftershocks and further seismic activity.
