Floods Leave NEEPCO Colony Isolated, Four Missing
Four individuals remain untraceable as the flood-battered NEEPCO colony in Arunachal Pradesh stays cut off from the rest of the region. The preliminary assessment by the Arunachal Pradesh Disaster Management Department revealed that 54 houses were damaged in the floods, with 30 of them completely destroyed.
The colony, home to employees of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), has been inaccessible since the deluge struck, hampering rescue and relief operations. The disaster management department has launched a detailed assessment to ascertain the full extent of the damage and plan recovery efforts.
Damage Assessment and Rescue Efforts
According to officials, the floods triggered landslides and severe waterlogging, isolating the colony. The 30 houses that were completely destroyed have left many families homeless, while the 24 partially damaged structures require urgent repairs. Search operations are ongoing for the four missing persons, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities deployed.
“The priority is to locate the missing individuals and provide immediate relief to affected families,” said a spokesperson for the Arunachal Pradesh Disaster Management Department. “We are coordinating with NEEPCO and other agencies to restore connectivity and supply essential items.”
Infrastructure and Communication Challenges
The isolation of the colony has disrupted communication lines and road access, complicating the delivery of aid. The disaster management department is working to establish alternative routes and deploy satellite phones to coordinate rescue operations. The floods have also damaged local power lines and water supply systems, adding to the hardships of residents.
NEEPCO officials have expressed concern over the safety of their employees and their families, urging the state government to expedite relief measures. The company has set up temporary shelters for displaced workers and is providing food and medical assistance.
Broader Impact and Future Precautions
The floods are part of a larger pattern of extreme weather events in the region, which experts attribute to climate change. The Arunachal Pradesh government has announced a compensation package for the affected families and plans to strengthen early warning systems and disaster preparedness in vulnerable areas.
“We are reviewing the flood response protocols and will implement measures to mitigate future incidents,” added the disaster management official. The state has also sought assistance from the central government for long-term rehabilitation and infrastructure rebuilding.
