A shocking case of superstition leading to murder has emerged from the border region of Karnataka and Maharashtra. A 38-year-old woman was allegedly tortured and killed by her husband's brother and other relatives after they claimed she was possessed by a devil.
The Victim and the Tragic Sequence of Events
The deceased has been identified as Muktabai, wife of Giddeppa from Murum village. Murum is a village in Maharashtra situated near Aland in Karnataka's Kalaburagi district. Muktabai, who was originally from Aland town, had been married to Giddeppa for ten years and the couple has a young son.
The tragedy began unfolding a few days ago when Muktabai complained of feeling dizzy. Instead of seeking medical help, her husband's brother interpreted her illness as a sign of devil possession. He insisted that the correct 'treatment' was to beat her with a neem stick to drive out the evil spirit.
Sustained Assault and Fatal Consequences
Acting on this dangerous superstition, the family members subjected Muktabai to brutal beatings with a neem stick for a couple of days. Her condition deteriorated severely due to the assault. Later, her parents were informed and they immediately rushed her to the GIMS hospital in Kalaburagi.
Despite being admitted for treatment, Muktabai succumbed to her injuries. She passed away at the hospital on Saturday evening, as confirmed by officials.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigation
Following her death, a formal case was registered. Initially, the complaint was filed at the Brahmapur police station in Kalaburagi city. However, since the crime occurred in Murum village, the case was subsequently transferred to the Murum police station in Maharashtra for further investigation.
Aland Police Inspector Saranabasappa Kodla provided details about the jurisdictional transfer. The victim's father, Neelakanth, has stated that the police have already taken three persons into their custody in connection with the murder.
This horrific incident highlights the deadly consequences of deep-rooted superstitions and the urgent need for awareness in rural areas. The police investigation is ongoing to ensure all those responsible for Muktabai's tragic death are brought to justice.
