A devastating family dispute in Bihar's Jamui district culminated in tragedy late Thursday night, resulting in the deaths of two young children. A woman, along with her three children, jumped into a well in Chhapardih village under the Sono police station area.
The Incident and Immediate Aftermath
The victims have been identified as Rubesha Khatoon (32), wife of Shamsher Ansari, and her children. The two children who lost their lives are Amir Ansari (5) and Anish Khatoon (8). According to police and villagers, the woman first threw her children into the well one by one before jumping in herself.
Alerted by the commotion, local villagers rushed to the spot and managed to rescue Rubesha Khatoon and one child. However, the other two children could not be saved and drowned. The bodies were recovered from the well and sent for postmortem, while the woman and the surviving child were taken to a hospital for treatment. The woman's condition is reported to be stable.
Alleged Trigger: A Heated Dispute Over Phone
Sono Station House Officer (SHO) Dharmendra Kumar provided details of the events leading to the extreme step. He stated that the woman had an alleged dispute with her husband, Shamsher Ansari, who works in Surat, Gujarat. The couple lived separately from the in-laws in their own house.
The incident unfolded on the evening of Thursday after Rubesha had a quarrel with her mother-in-law over property issues. During a subsequent phone call, her husband sided with his mother. The situation escalated when the husband allegedly told his wife to "go and die." Distraught by this, the woman later left her house with her three children and headed towards the well.
Contradictory Claims and Police Probe
The police have registered an unnatural death (UD) case and initiated a detailed investigation. However, the family's account differs from the villagers' version. The woman's father-in-law, Mohammad Multaz, claimed the incident was an accident. He stated that his granddaughter slipped and fell into the well while playing, and his grandson jumped in to save her.
This claim stands in direct contrast to the account given by multiple villagers, who allege the act was intentional. "The police are trying to determine the exact circumstances leading to the incident and are awaiting the postmortem report. The woman's condition is stable, and the police will interrogate her once she is fit to talk," added SHO Dharmendra Kumar.
Meanwhile, Shamsher Ansari, the husband, is on his way back to Jamui from Surat after being informed of the tragic incident. The police continue their investigation to piece together the complete sequence of events.
