Bengaluru police have arrested a woman and her boyfriend for the murder of a 65-year-old woman over a loan of Rs 20,000. The accused also removed and stole 39 grams of gold jewellery from the victim's body, according to officials.
Murder over unpaid loan
The victim, identified as Sushilamma, was found dead in her home in the Nagarbhavi area on June 28. Police investigations revealed that she had lent Rs 20,000 to the accused woman, a neighbor. When Sushilamma demanded repayment, the woman and her boyfriend allegedly decided to kill her to avoid returning the money.
On the day of the murder, the couple visited Sushilamma's house, strangled her, and then removed her gold jewellery worth approximately Rs 2.5 lakh. They fled the scene, but police tracked them down using CCTV footage and mobile phone records.
Arrest and recovery
Both suspects were arrested on June 30 from a hideout in Kengeri. Police recovered the stolen gold jewellery and the victim's mobile phone from their possession. The accused have been charged with murder and robbery under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Senior police officer Ramesh Kumar said, "The accused confessed to the crime during interrogation. They planned the murder to evade repayment of the loan and to steal the gold ornaments."
Community shock
The incident has shocked the local community, where Sushilamma was known as a kind and helpful person. Neighbors expressed grief and demanded strict punishment for the accused. Police have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and the accused will be produced in court soon.
