In a decisive move against the sale of alcohol near educational institutions, residents of Kalewal Beet in Hoshiarpur district locked a liquor shop situated close to a local school on Wednesday. The action was taken by villagers who are concerned about the negative impact of the shop on students and the community.
Protest Against Liquor Shop Near School
The villagers gathered in large numbers and padlocked the shop, demanding its immediate relocation. They argued that the shop's proximity to the school was detrimental to the moral and educational environment. The protestors also submitted a memorandum to the local authorities, urging them to take strict action against the illegal sale of liquor near schools.
Community Demands Action
Local residents expressed their anger and frustration over the continued operation of the liquor shop despite repeated complaints. They highlighted that the shop was located just a few meters away from the school, making it easily accessible to students. The villagers have threatened to intensify their agitation if the authorities fail to address their concerns.
The protest was peaceful, with villagers taking turns to guard the locked shop to prevent its reopening. They have vowed to keep the shop closed until the administration intervenes and ensures its permanent closure or relocation.
This incident is part of a broader trend in Punjab where communities are increasingly taking a stand against the proliferation of liquor vends near schools, colleges, and religious places. The state government has also issued directives to relocate such shops, but enforcement remains a challenge.
