Police in Vijayawada have registered a serious case against a local jewellery trader, invoking new legal provisions, on allegations of sexual harassment and stalking. The incident highlights workplace exploitation and the use of the recently implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Case Registered Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The I Town police formally booked the accused, identified as 47-year-old Sanjay Jain, under Sections 75 and 78 of the BNS. This legal action stems from a detailed complaint filed by a woman who was previously employed at Jain's silver jewellery shop in the city. Circle Inspector Gunaram of I Town police station confirmed the development, stating that notices have been served to the accused following the registration of the First Information Report (FIR).
Allegations of Exploiting Financial Distress
According to the police complaint, the victim was facing significant financial difficulties. In what was initially presented as an act of help, her employer, Sanjay Jain, gave her a valuable silver ornament to assist her through the crisis. However, the situation took a dark turn thereafter. The woman alleged that Jain began to sexually harass her and engage in stalking behaviour. The harassment reportedly commenced because she was unable to return the valuable ornament he had given her, creating a dynamic of power and coercion.
Police Action and Timeline
The victim gathered the courage to approach the I Town police station and lodge an official complaint on December 22. Taking her allegations seriously, the police promptly initiated proceedings. The registration of the case under specific sections of the BNS indicates the gravity with which the authorities are treating the matter. The investigation is now ongoing, and further legal steps will follow based on the evidence collected.
This case brings to the fore critical issues of workplace safety and the exploitation of vulnerable employees, especially women, by those in positions of power. It also marks one of the early applications of the BNS in Vijayawada for offences related to sexual harassment and stalking.
